Mekong Delta in November: Where to Go, Costs & Travel Tips

Published October 29, 2026

November is a good time for nature trips and pilgrimages in the Mekong Delta, but you should still prepare for rain. From Ho Chi Minh City, consider Con Chim, Tra Vinh or Ben Tre–Tien Giang for a day trip. Allow two days if you want to combine Chau Doc with Tra Su Cajuput Forest.

This guide compares four itineraries by duration, interests and budget. The climate information describes seasonal patterns, not a forecast for your departure date. November 2026 tour schedules are listed separately for reference.

Is November a good time to visit the Mekong Delta? Does it still rain?

You can visit the Mekong Delta in November, but do not assume the rain has stopped completely. The climate guide published by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism lists May–November as the rainy period in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. Outdoor itineraries should therefore include alternatives for changing weather.

Check the forecast for your actual destination rather than relying only on regional average temperatures. For trips involving boats or ferries, ask about local operating conditions. In heavy rain or when services are suspended, choose a suitable alternative instead of trying to follow the original itinerary at all costs.

Is November still flood season at Tra Su?

November falls within the September–November period recommended by Vietnam Tourism for visiting Chau Doc and Tra Su. Water levels and scenery still vary by year and date. The same duckweed cover, water levels and boating conditions cannot be guaranteed every day. Read the Chau Doc destination guide.

Where should you go in the Mekong Delta in November?

Choose according to the time you have and the activities you enjoy, then look for suitable tour dates. For a day trip, focus on one route. If you want to visit temples and shrines as well as a cajuput forest, a two-day itinerary allows more time for breaks. The table below offers general suggestions, not an assessment of any individual traveller's ability to participate.

Four itineraries departing from Ho Chi Minh City
ItinerarySuggested durationBest forThings to consider
Con Chim1 dayTraditional food, community life and countryside activitiesFerry or boat transfers; choose cycling and games according to your abilities
Tra Vinh – Khmer culture1 dayKhmer temples, architecture and local cuisineTransfers between several stops; modest clothing is required at places of worship
Ben Tre – Tien Giang1 dayA pilgrimage with a same-day return to Ho Chi Minh CitySeveral religious sites in one day; balance walking with rest breaks
Chau Doc – Tra Su2 days, 1 nightCombining cajuput forest scenery with spiritual sitesLonger coach journeys, getting on and off boats, and an overnight stay

Four Mekong Delta itineraries to consider in November

1. Con Chim: a day of countryside life

Con Chim suits travellers who prefer community experiences to visiting many attractions in a single day. Nasatourist's programme includes learning about traditional kitchens, dining in local homes and trying regional cakes. Families can choose their level of participation without joining every game.

Before booking, ask about the boat or ferry departure point, crossing time and alternative activities in wet weather. If you do not wish to cycle, discuss transport arrangements in advance. When comparing prices, distinguish included services from drinks, costume rental and optional paid activities.

2. Tra Vinh: Khmer architecture and culture

Choose Tra Vinh if you are interested in Khmer temple architecture and local culture. The programme on the website includes Vam Ray Pagoda, Ang Pagoda, Ba Om Pond and Sa-leng Pagoda. These stops offer different cultural settings, but allow time to rest between visits.

Dress modestly and follow local guidance in places of worship. If you want to rent Khmer clothing for photos, ask about the rental period and separate charges. A Tra Vinh tour does not automatically include festival activities; check the itinerary, locations and finishing time.

3. Ben Tre – Tien Giang: a one-day pilgrimage

The Ben Tre–Tien Giang route is an option for travellers who want to visit religious sites and return the same day. The Land of Coconuts pilgrimage tour lists Van Phuoc, Hung Lam, Hoi Ton and Lien Hoa–Me Nam Hai. Review the order of visits instead of choosing solely by the number of temples.

For groups with older travellers, ask about walking distances, steps, coach journey times and rest opportunities at each stop. A day trip is not necessarily a low-exertion trip. Discuss vegetarian meals, help boarding the coach and pickup times before booking.

4. Chau Doc – Tra Su: forest scenery and pilgrimage

Chau Doc–Tra Su is more suitable if you have two days and want to combine nature with spiritual sites. A suggested route is to travel to Chau Doc, stay overnight and arrange forest and religious-site visits according to the actual route. This may not be the best option if you need to limit time sitting on a coach.

At Tra Su, ask about boat types, operating hours and wet-weather arrangements. If travelling with young children or anyone who needs mobility assistance, discuss boat boarding and walking sections beforehand. The specific tour itinerary may differ from this guide's general suggestion.

Can you combine your trip with the Ok Om Bok festival in November 2026?

You can plan around the event schedule, but confirm the specific activities you intend to attend. A report published by Vinh Long Newspaper, Radio and Television on October 23, 2026 states that the Culture, Sports and Tourism Week associated with Ok Om Bok is expected to take place on November 18–24, 2026. These dates cover the whole event week, not the schedule of each ceremony or Khmer boat race.

If the festival is your main reason for travelling, select the activity first, then arrange transport and accommodation. A tour departing on November 22 does not necessarily include evening festivities. Check local event announcements and updates.

November 2026 Mekong Delta tour dates and budgeting

Budget according to the programme and service level, not just the number of days. For independent travel, add transport, admission, boat or ferry fares, meals, accommodation where needed and personal spending. For a package tour, read the inclusions before comparing it with the total cost of travelling independently.

Packing checklist for the Mekong Delta in November

Pack light, bring rain protection and choose clothing suitable for both sightseeing and religious sites. If your itinerary includes ferries or boats, protect your phone and documents with a waterproof bag. Comfortable shoes with good grip are usually more useful than extra photo outfits without essential supplies.

  • Clothing: tops with sleeves and trousers or skirts appropriate for places of worship; pack a spare outfit in case you get wet.
  • Rain and sun: a compact raincoat, hat, drinking water and a waterproof bag.
  • Getting around: shoes or sandals with good grip; avoid bulky luggage when boarding boats or ferries.
  • Spending: bring some small-denomination cash for extras and ask prices before using a service.
  • Pickup time: check the notice for your booked departure rather than using another tour's meeting time.
  • Family travel: discuss rest breaks, meals, walking ability and mobility assistance in advance.
  • On boats: wear a life jacket and follow the operator's instructions.

Independent travel or an organised tour?

Independent travel suits those who want to adjust stops and rest times; a tour suits those who prefer a planned itinerary and a coordinating contact. For a private group, compare vehicle quotations and additional costs before deciding. See vehicle rental in Ho Chi Minh City if your family wants more control over the route.

Frequently asked questions about the Mekong Delta in November

Has the rainy season ended by November?

You cannot assume that the rain has ended. Vietnam Tourism's climate guide still includes November in the rainy period for the Mekong Delta. Check the forecast for your specific destination and travel date.

Where should I go for a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?

Consider Con Chim for community experiences, Tra Vinh for Khmer culture, or Ben Tre–Tien Giang for pilgrimage. Focus on one main route to avoid spending too much time travelling.

Is flood-season scenery guaranteed at Tra Su in November?

November falls within the visiting period recommended by Vietnam Tourism, but the same scenery cannot be guaranteed every day. Check local conditions and boat operating schedules shortly before departure.

Are day tours suitable for older travellers?

Review the specific itinerary. A day tour may still involve an early start, long coach journeys and walking at several stops. Ask about rest periods, steps and assistance before choosing.

Are costume rental, VAT and gifts included in the tour price?

These depend on the individual programme. A scarf gift or costume rental offered on one tour does not mean it is included on other tours. Check the quotation, inclusions and exclusions before booking.

Does the Tra Vinh tour on November 22, 2026 include the Ok Om Bok festival?

The departure date alone does not confirm this. The programme must specify the activities, locations and attendance times. The November 18–24 event week does not mean every tour during that period includes the festival.
